Thursday 12th October - Fiesta!!
Last night I went to Salsa class with Vicci. The silly cow let me think she was a beginner so I went along with her and the whole “trying something new thing” turns out she’s a bit of a pro! Anyway, it was still really good fun. They have classes on everyday of the year. Saturdays and Sundays, and fiestas. It’s 25 euros a month for students, which isn’t bad, and I think there’s a discount if you join up for more than one month at a time. It was really good fun though and I’m very tempted to go back because even as a complete beginner I didn’t feel like a complete idiot.
Not sure why today is a special day but it’s a day off so I’m happy. Met up with the English girls at the beach at 11.30 today and walked home with Vicci at about 5pm. It was so beautiful at Las Canteras today. We were further north up the beach than I had been last time and there’s a reef you can swim up to. Vicci and I did. Well we all set out but the girls got tired and turned back and only Vicci and I carried on. As you swam towards it, it gradually got more rocky until you had a floor beneath you. Then there was a step of rock which ran about 100m wide but wasn’t very deep. Waves just cascade over the step and you can sit on the rock floor with your back to the rock step and the waves crash around you like a little waterfall but when a really strong wave comes it shoves you along the rock floor and leaves a bubbly Jacuzzi behind. It was such a special feeling. Felt like the rest of the world didn’t exist for a little moment whilst we stood on the shelf looking further out to see with the beach behind us.
Walking home with Vicci we got accosted by an English guy asking us if we were English and “thank god” if we were. Turns out it was the guy that Vicci had met on Saturday who had begged her for some money (20 euros) saying the bank machine had swallowed his card and that he was waiting on a money transfer from his sister but that he would meet up with her later on Saturday and pay her back. He didn’t show up. He had given her a name, address, email and phone number as well but the phone number was one digit short and the email address went something like www.tom_bloggs@hotmail.com which obviously isn’t valid and Vicci asked a taxi driver if he’d ever heard of the pension that he had told Vicci he was staying at and he hadn’t. So Vicci was like “where’s my money?” and he was really quite rude – considering she’d supposedly done her a favour. I think it was a usual con that he tries on with tourists (wonder how much he makes out of it!) and never expected to see her again! I wonder how many times they’re going to bump into each other over the next 8 months!!
Tonight we’re going to Vicci’s for a little flat warming but it’s not going to be a late one as some of us have to work tomorrow. Boo! But then I do have 3 days off after tomorrow…hard life.
